If you are making a move to New Jersey from NYC, I would suggest you research what septic tanks are and what well water is. NYC is hooked up to a public water and public sewer system so septic and well may be unfamiliar to some.

A septic tank is a large underground container that is designed to treat wastewater from homes and businesses that are not connected to a public sewer system. It is typically made of concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene and is buried in the ground near the building it serves.

Septic tanks are commonly used in rural areas and small towns where public sewer systems are not available. They require regular maintenance and care to ensure that they function properly and do not create health hazards or environmental problems.

Well water is water that comes from a hole or well that has been drilled into the ground to reach an underground water source. This water is often used for drinking, cooking, and other household purposes in rural areas and homes that are not connected to a public water supply.

When it rains or snows, water seeps into the ground and is filtered through layers of soil and rock. This filtered water collects in underground aquifers, which are layers of porous rock or sand that hold water. A well is drilled into an aquifer to access this water.

Typically, homes that are hooked up to well water will have a whole house filtration system.

Be sure to have both a septic and well water tank inspection on a home you are looking to purchase to ensure they are in working order without defects.
